Cynthia de Giorgio is an esteemed art historian, author, and long-serving curator of one of Malta’s most celebrated cultural treasures — St John’s Co-Cathedral and Museum in Valletta. Renowned for her deep knowledge of Baroque art and for her passionate commitment to preserving Malta’s artistic heritage, Cynthia has dedicated her career to interpreting, protecting, and sharing the story of this extraordinary monument with audiences from around the world. A graduate of the University of Malta, Cynthia holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History of Art and an MA in Baroque Studies, specialising in the art and architecture of the Baroque period with a particular focus on St John’s Co-Cathedral — the 16th-century conventual church of the Knights of the Order of St John, famed for its lavish interior decoration, magnificent ceiling by Mattia Preti, and priceless collections of sculpture, tapestries, and masterpieces such as Caravaggio’s monumental paintings. During her tenure, Cynthia has not only overseen the care and interpretation of the Co-Cathedral’s incomparable art and architectural heritage but has also played a pivotal role in expanding public access and appreciation of this jewel of European Baroque culture. An accomplished author and scholar, Cynthia has written several significant publications on St John’s Co-Cathedral and related topics, including The Image of Triumph and the Knights of Malta, The Conventual Church of the Knights of Malta, and The Great Temple 360º. She has also organised major exhibitions, co-edited scholarly works such as Caravaggio and Paintings of Realism in Malta, and contributed articles and lectures that foster deeper understanding of Maltese art history and Baroque iconography.
